When Johnny Miller redesigned Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland, CA, he brought the term “American Links” with him. As a NorCal native Miller knew what the property could be and created a true test for golfers of every level. With generous fairways styled to accommodate for the windy afternoons and multi-tiered greens for the more American style high ball are constants in the design at the course affectionately known as Metro. Just a few minutes away from Oakland International Airport, it’s not an uncommon sight to see planes flying low above as you play at what feels like a driver’s reach away.
Metropolitan Golf Links has some of the finest greens in the area, a credit to their maintenance crew who keep the course in top shape as the official home course of the Cal Bears golf team. Every Par 5 at Metro is a risk reward for the more experienced player, particularly the 10th and 17th with forced carries yards just off the front of the greens. The layup areas are generous for higher handicap players allowing them to still put together a solid score for the day. There are multiple Par 4s that will pose a challenge to all players. The 4th and 8th will test your distance and accuracy off the tee while the 14th is the standout where precision iron play is needed for the approach.
A full driving range and practice facility are available along with a snack shack and restaurant, rounding out all your needs on and off the course. Metropolitan Golf Links is a must play in the East Bay.
